College/Student Intern (Paid/Unpaid) ID-2241

DEFINITION

To allow university students, Junior/Senior high school students, and recent high school and university graduates to gain hands-on experience by assisting with administrative and professional assignments. This program provides the County with the potential to engage our future workforce and demonstrate how interns can pursue their career goals while serving their community.  

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERESTICS

The participant should be in a recognized high school or college intern program, job training or educational program, or in a government or private-sector educational or job training program which requires, or is enhanced by, on the job training. Internships also offer local high school graduates a chance to gain experience within their community, and provide university students and recent university graduates with an opportunity to practice new skills in a real-world setting. An intern’s service shall not exceed twelve (12) months in length, however, the initial appointment may be extended for up to six (6) months with the approval of the Human Resources Director for a total duration of no greater than eighteen (18) months. No intern may work more than 999 hours per fiscal year and are temporary positions within the Confidential Unit.

Examples of Duties

The following are the duties performed by interns in this classification. However, interns may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.

  • Students will receive exposure to public sector careers in healthcare, mental health, social services, finance, administration, human resources, law, agriculture, information technology, construction, and engineering at the local government level while training them for skilled, professional and administrative careers through the practical application of courses being studied.
  • Participants in this program will be given defined projects at their assigned County department with a defined timeframe for their completion. 
  • The work of interns is intended to supplement - not supplant - the work that would be done by a regular County employee. 
  • Assignments and duties vary widely based on the training assignment and department needs.

Essential Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Basic principles and practices used in the work of subject area to which assigned.

Ability to: 

  • Interact with members of the public.
  • Research requests for information.
  • Learn a variety of administrative and professional tasks.
  • Prepare and write reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Training and Experience

Education

An intern shall be currently enrolled in an accredited school program, or shall have graduated from an accredited school program no more than twelve (12) months prior to the intern appointment date.
 
 A Junior or Senior level high school student may be considered for an intern position, but must obtain a Student Work Permit prior to appointment. 

Experience

No work experience required.

Note:   Employment in this class is restricted to students enrolled or recently graduated in a high school/college curriculum in a field appropriate to assigned duties. Employment in this class is temporary in nature and is designed to offer the student a practical learning experience. No full-time permanent appointments will be made in this class. 

Special Requirements:

  • Proof of current student status or recent degree obtainment must remain on file with the Human Resources Department. If applicable, a Student Work Permit must also remain on file with the Human Resources Department. Proof of student status must be a copy of a student I.D. card showing the current enrollment, a copy of a registration receipt showing the current quarter/semester date, or a diploma or certificate demonstrating program completion.
  • May need to possess a valid driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles as required by the position.
